  • Like its predecessor ALACE, is an autonomous drifting profiler used to measure subsurface currents and make profile measurements.  With over 4000 units (ALACE and APEX) delivered to users in 19 nations, APEX is field-proven, and is routinely deployed from C130 aircraft and merchant ships (VOS).    APEX can be programmed to follow isobaric or isopycnal surfaces. The ARGO "park and profile" multi-depth sequence is a standard feature.

  • The Slocum Glider is an autonomous vehicle which moves up and down in the ocean by changing buoyancy. Wings allow steerable gliding, thus horizontal propulsion. The vehicle  traces a sawtooth profile, observing temperature, conductivity, etc. versus depth, and, at the surface, fix position via GPS and communicate via satellite.

  • The Shearmeter measures vertical shear in the deep ocean. It is a neutrally buoyant float, 10 meters in length.

  • The RAFOS Source transmits at 261 Hz, 181 dB, at depths to 2000 m. Moored underwater sound sources are furnished as a turnkey system, complete with projector, signal generator, programmable controller, pressure housing and batteries.

  • The Swept-Frequency source is intended for application in Ocean Acoustic Tomography.

  • In addition to continuing work on the current littoral electric gliders and the Slocum Thermal, Webb Research is moving towards the development of a family of buoyancy driven autonomous vehicles, each optimized to explore a different part of the ocean. Current advances includes electric gliders capable of operation in deeper waters and a glider that is both mobile and bottom resting. The ability to be both mobile and bottom-resting will allow a traditional, bottom mounted sensor platform to be deployed from over the horizon, covertly move into position, and then become a bottom fixture, surfacing only when information of interest is acquired.
